Evening all,
Thankfully a bright sunny, if breezy morning meant we could finally get some rugby played after a couple of weeks off.
I hope the squad enjoyed the training up at Sidcup - and were able to focus on certain drills and really build on the skills they've been showing the last few weeks.
I travelled over to Beccehamians with today's selected team, which after seeing their pitches converted to a boating lake a couple of years back, was a bit of a surprise, given that the Old Colfes festival was called off this weekend....
We were entered into a group with Park House, Old Whitgiftians and Old Elthamians - and so we knew we were in for some tough games. We started well and dominated the Park House team running out comfortable winners 5-2. We then ran into OW's and they were really well drilled and had a couple of strong quick boys....they were the best team we faced....some of our tackling first off was not quite up to scratch, but we improved as the game went on - but too little to late and we lost 7-3. We then faced OE's and a similar story....a bit galling that their main man was an ex-Sidcup player who is super fast and their tactics were as predictable as they were effective as we literally struggled to get to grips with them and lost out 5-3....
However, we were then placed in the league table as Bowl Semi Finalists - drawn to play........OE's again....similar story really and this time I think it was 4-2.....
So a fair bit of ring rust - having not played since November and ultimately we came up short but as always there was no faulting the boys effort and commitment. We just need to work on a few things:
Keeping our shape / width
Not running back into trouble
Passing the ball before we're taken to ground
Making our tackles count, especially early in games
Player of the week was Lewis King - some strong tackling and direct running - well done Lewis. Also thanks from me to Lee - Josh's dad for stepping in an helping with controlling our bunch....and hopefully will be a valuable addition to our coaching set-up....
See you all next week for training at Sidcup - up on Carlton Road Field....and where we'll be looking out for everyone ahead of the Colfes festival and upcoming Kent Prelims.
Have a good week.
cheers, Stuart
