Broken fingers but no broken spirit!

Sunday was a long, tough and competitive festival in which we took a step up from last week, coming away with 2 wins and a draw.

Sidcup Vs Beckenham W 2-0
A great start to the day, a controlled and powerful performance saw try’s from Ollie and Tom. Unfortunately we lost Ashton and Dominic to finger and knee injuries respectively, but both boys helped set the tone for the day with strong performances and we hope to see them back soon.

Sidcup Vs Sevenoaks D 1-1
Defence was the key to this draw against a soild Sevenoaks team. We held our shape, looked after the ball and tacked well to turn round 0-1 at half time. Lewis King stepped up to score the vital second half try, strong and determined to cross the line, it summed up our performance.

Sidcup Vs Bromley L 1-2
After a long break we took on a good Bromley team, having gone down three nil to them last week, this week was a different story. More strong defence kept them to two try’s while a barn storming run from Elliott gave us our try. We were unlucky not to get a draw as Frank was denied his try by the ref, but we are claiming moral victory, thanks to our very own travelling TMO! The refereeing was generally very good all day, and having ref’d many matches myself I know its not easy, but that’s clearly a try!

Sidcup Vs Cranbrook L 1-4
This was our weakest performance of the day, mainly due to tirednes and a few concentration lapses. Having defended strongly and spread the ball well all day we stopped doing this and kept trucking up the middle and our game suffered. By this stage we had lost Gabriel to another finger injury, and the effort of the previous few games was catching up. Towards the end of the second half the boys were turning it round and the hard work was rewarded by a try for Jack, stretching for the line like Mr Elastic!

Sidcup Vs OE’s W 3-0
A quick turn around for this match saw the boys pick up where they left off against Cranbrook. EO’s could not match our speed and power. Ollie Scoring two almost identical try’s with strong running off a solid build up of several phases by the team. Despite them throwing in all their best players the second half was all Sidcup with Jack finishing off with a typical pirouetting try.

All in all a good day scoring more try’s than we conceded for the second week in a row. Special mentions to: Owen for a great day with clever passing and good work at the breakdown. Tommy B tacking like crazy and nicking several balls again the head at scrum time! Zeka for another intelligent display of distribution, and Luke for manfully playing on with a bloody elbow and painful ankles!
We will continue to work on rucking and looking after the ball next week and try to keep up our strong start to the festival season.
Well done all.
Steve.
