A great morning's rugby to open the season. Two matches played, one at Horn Park, one round the corner at the school, but both were highly competitive and close.
I think the boys from both clubs were surprised at the space they had on the full size pitches and with 13 players. At times they ignored the new found wildernesses that extended 60 metres into the distance, instead refusing to ignore old habits of running into the nearest available traffic....but eventually some fantastic games of rugby ensued.
Our 'A' team for the day played some great stuff, forwards dominant in the scrum, securing ball regularly. The half back pairing moved it nice and sharply and we maintained some great attacking shape. On more than one occasion we over-played, telegraphed our passes a bit, allowing the Colfes wing, with some serious wheels for a 12 year old, to score a hatrick of tries....I think the game ended 15-25.
The B's also had a terrific game, battling well. Its always a challenge integrating new players into an established squad and so great credit goes to both for gelling so well, building that camradarie that we know and love that rugby is built on. A really tight fought match ebbed and flowed and indeed with slightly better game management that comes with experience we probably would have won; alas we ended up on the wrong end of a 25-30 defeat.
So not the results we wanted, but performances to be proud of and solid foundations for a great season. Well played lads.
