Sidcup RFC 36 Maidstone Titans RFC 0
On a chilly, damp morning our full squad assembled on a surprisingly good pitch bearing in mind recent monsoon conditions. Obviously the recent investment in the drainage system is paying dividends now.
The game started with super Sidcup off to a flyer with Luke applying the after burners after a trademark mazy run down the right hand side for our first try. We were looking focused, dynamic and fluid and our set piece was solid although I did find the constant scrum resets for wheeling (90 degrees I think) a bit frustrating. Dave can enlighten me/us on the front row prop engagement/technical aspects...
Sidcup seemed to get over the gain line making metres at will with all the forwards contributing. The try count was steadily building, a persistent Mitch wriggling through defenders to hit the whitewash plus an eye catching score from Luke running a lovely line which left the sinking Titans flat footed. Ben M converted a few long range tricky kicks along the way to add the extras.
The boys really looked up for it with some good rucking and counter rucking. Quick hands and line speed from the backs found the gaps which we fully exploited.
Maidstone struggled to have any impact inside our 22 (metre line), and when they did get their ball carriers in to space Ayo, Alfie and a memorable Nathan hit and shirt pull (all perfectly legal, I think he wanted a Titan shirt as a souvenir) stopped them in their tracks resulting with some good turnovers and counter attacks from Sidcup. Alfie's try stopping tackle down the wing showed true determination in never giving up!
Special mention to Billy for his great offload to his brother giving him the try whilst drawing the defending players his way - great team work!
We rotated the squad giving everyone a run out but the performance level stayed high.
Dave was purring after the game, waxing lyrical about our shape, tackling, commitment. Dave commented ' No one was Man of the Match, everyone was'!! Tom was grinning like a Cheshire Cat as well, though I think he was still in the zone from last nights Great Gatsby knees up....
Comments from ref Paul B "best you've ever played" will hopefully continue to spur us on!
Well done to Maidstone too - a great squad of players, coaches and parents - hope to meet again!
