Match report by an impressed newbie supporter...
Already crowned champions Sidcup entertained Havant in their final home league game of the season in bright April sunshine. 1st played 2nd at Crescent Farm with Havant needing a win to guarantee a play-off place whilst Sidcup’s attempt to go the whole season undefeated had finally come to an end last time out when they lost 16-22 away to Tottonians.
A big crowd had gathered for the end of the season promotion celebrations with bouncy castles, a large marquee and barbecues in evidence. Cricket was in progress at the rear of the pavilion but the balmy atmosphere was shaken by loud music emanating from the home changing room 10 mins before the kick-off. This attempt to amplify team spirit backfired as Havant scored a try and conversion inside 7 minutes. Mistake, 5 minutes later Sidcup had taken the lead through a penalty and a converted try of their own.
The game ebbed and flowed without further scoring until Havant converted another try on the stroke of half-time. There was still time for Sidcup to re-take the lead with another converted try that saw captain Jon West weave through Havant’s defence in stoppage time to give Sidcup a 24-20 half-time lead.
Two terrific trys midway the 2nd half looked to have wrapped the game up for Sidcup. First scrum-half Sean Osborn capped an excellent game by touching down to be shortly followed by a barnstorming run and try by hooker Charlie Hopkins. But back came Havant with 2 further trys of their own to narrow the gap to just 8 points. Five minutes from time Sidcup finally put the game away with another try from which fly half Josh Twyford surprisingly missed his kick at goal, having converted all his previous attempts. No matter Sidcup had prevailed in a breathless encounter and can look forward to life in National 3 which should hold no fears for their extremely athletic forwards.
