As well as the normal prizes for Player of the Season, last night's event also saw presentations to Allan Jones - Clubman of the Year, Phil Ubee, who steps down after four years as Head Coach and, of course, Phil West who steps down this year after four years as President of the Club. Everyone in the packed hall stood to give Phil West a standing ovation in recognition of the time, effort and commitment he has made to the club over the last four years.
Awards for Player of the Season went to:
First XV - Richard Pilgrim
Second XV - Steve Duffus
Third XV - Andy Hind
Fourth XV - Gary Mckelvey

A most enjoyable day was had by all except the weather was not up to the previous day with a stinging cold wind. I would like to thank Andy Hind for coaching the side and all the supporters for travelling to a cold Canterbury. The side looked smart and professional in the new Sidcup RFC sevens strip. Could be next years strip for the 1st XV as maybe we will not have so many penalties against us in a darker strip!
The hog roast and curry was a treat!

PRESIDENT'S & FAMILY MEMORIAL DAY

SIDCUP XV 14 - PRESIDENT'S XV 12
Sidcup XV - St. Mary's & St. Joseph's School Old Boys XV
Huge thanks to everyone that either helped organise or came along to support yesterday's President's & Family Memorial Day. The day was another that will live long in the memories of those that were there. The two matches were both close encounters with some fine rugby and spirited performances in both games. The post-match auction raised almost £2,500 for the two charities, The Royal Marsden Hospital and The Jimmy Mizzen Bus Appeal.
Many thanks particularly to Kelly McGill for helping organise the bouncy castle, the chirldren's entertainer and espeically the Cracklin' Griffins who put on a great show.
Many thanks also to Tommy Bull for his work as photographer; all 169 photos taken by Tommy are now available on the gallery.

NEXT SEASON?
Looking forward to next season already, with this season's play-offs completed yesterday, the newly branded London 1 South looks like it will be made up of the following 14 clubs:
SIDCUP, Beckenham, Chichester, Chobham, Cobham, Dover, Gravesend, Haywards Heath, Maidstone, Old Colfeians, Old Elthamians, Thanet Wanderers, Tunbridge Wells, Wimbledon
Old Elthamians 2s 5 - Sidcup 2s 10

Sidcup RFC finished off the season in good style with both the 1st and 2nd XVs winning for the third consecutive week. With a number of players recovering from long-term injuries over the last few weeks, the senior squad is left wondering what might have been possible in more favourable circumstances.
Congratulations to the 2s for finishing the season with a fine run of 8 consecutive victories culminating in a win yesterday over league leaders OEs, which takes the 2s to third spot in their league. The 1s finished 8th in their league and contrary to predictions a few weeks ago, had some part to play in the final outcome of the top three teams in the London 2 South league.
Thanks to Tommy Bull for acting as photographer on the day. Click here to go to the Gallery to see the 199 photos taken by Tom.

2009/10 SENIOR COACHING STRUCTURE
After four years as Director of Coaching at Sidcup Rugby Club, Phil Ubee will be standing down at the end of the current season. During his tenure, Phil has seen one relegation but successfully won automatic promotion in the following season and stands down having consolidated our place in the London 2 South league. In addition to league rugby, Phil guided the team through the busy 125th anniversary season with memorable performances against a Kent President's XV and a strong Penguin International RFC side. Sidcup RFC, its players and Committee are grateful to Phil for the contribution he has made over the last four years and we wish him every success in future roles.
Darian Uys has agreed to take on the role of Head Coach as a player/coach. Originally from Kimberly, South Africa, Darian joined Sidcup RFC in July 2008 having previously been Head Coach as a player/coach at Peterborough RFC for six years.
From the 2009/10 season, Sidcup RFC will introduce the role of Director of Senior Rugby. The primary purpose of the role will be to coordinate all off-field, playing related matters ensuring smooth communication between the Club's administration and the senior playing membership. An announcement of who will fill the role of Director of Senior Rugby will be made shortly.
Brian 'Smudge' Castleton will continue his successful role as 1st XV Manager and vacancies currently exist for similar positions managing the 2nd and 3rd XVs. Any interested applicants should contact either Phil West or Ian Anderson to discuss the roles in more detail.
We wish everybody mentioned above all the very best in their future endeavours.

Presidents Quiz Night - Frday 13 March
Many thanks to all the members and guests that supported the Quiz Night on Friday. A total of £490 was raised and will go into the rugby club's funds. The winning table was captained by Dave Price with his team of vets and their wives. This included the 1st XV Manager, Brian 'Smudge' Castleton. David 'Young Mr' Grace and his table came just a few points behind in second place and it was good to see support from the junior section with tables being taken by coaches, managers and parents from the U16s and U13s.

LONDON'S OLDEST RUGBY CLUBS (featuring Sidcup RFC)
![]() |
'London's Oldest Rugby Clubs' is a book written by Dick Tyson, a friend of the Club. The book was released in March this year; it has been very successful. Rugby Times called it 'A Masterpiece' and Rugby World rated it '4 Stars - Silky Skills'! It currently stands (September, 2008 edition) at number 10 in Rugby World Magazine’s Top Selling Rugby Books Chart. This is its second successive month ‘at the top’ and it should do well at Christmas too. If you are interested in buying a copy, the club will benefit if you buy the book by visiting Dick's website (www.dicktyson.co.uk) and let him know that you saw the book advertisied on this website when you order a copy. Dick will also sign and dedicate copies, if you let him know what you'd like him to write when you order your copy.
