TOUCH RUGBY - FUN IN THE SUN

Players past and present together with families and loyal supporters enjoyed Bank Holiday Monday in the sunshine at Sidcup RFC, as we introduced a Touch Rugby competition for the first time in support of the RFU ‘Go Play Rugby’ Campaign.

Eight teams were entered and thanks are due to Allison Couldridge, who allowed the President to make a guest appearance in her team for a couple of games. The 8 teams were split into two groups, which produced a thrilling final between Meares’s Mizzes and Whitford’s Hankies. This was won 5 – 3 by Meares’s Mizzes, who were led to victory by Captain and Man of the Tournament, Colin Meares.

Touch rugby final

The Plate Final was between The Young Ones (U18s) and J.D.’s Dunnits, a Sidcup 1st team of years past. This summed up the whole of the afternoon when The Young Ones overcame their seniors 2 – 0. The youngsters were keen to point out that this trophy was going to be the first of many for the season.

Toucr rugby plate

The trophies were presented by Club Chairman, Ian Anderson and hopefully, with support like we had today, this could become an annual event.

Many thanks go to Neil and Simon Beaton for running the bar-b-q and who had to make a second visit to Morrisons to ensure that no one went hungry.

REALITY CHECK AT THE SEASIDE

Sidcup travelled to join Bromley and hosts Eastbourne in a three way tournament held in the heat of the English summer! Sidcup took a 1st XV and 2nd XV with an initial party of 20 players leaving early for the coast, in their search for accommodation that had been booked for the evening's entertainment. It is a pity that the following players and supporters didn’t follow suit as this summer's shy sun brought out the whole of south London onto the M25 and A22. Well it seemed like it!

The format for the afternoon allowed the three teams to play in a three way tournament of two twenty minute halves, with the 2nd XVs of Sidcup and Eastbourne playing a full eighty minute game.

Sidcup 1st XV started against Eastbourne up the hill and against the stiff breeze but went into a ten point early lead. This seemed to be the signal to switch off and against a lively Eastbourne side this was very unwise. Having gained promotion into London 3 South East last season Eastbourne looked a talented and well organised side that were not shy of running with the ball. Their appetite in their first pre-season game was greater than Sidcup’s, who could have been labelled heavy legged after their third trial game in a week.

Sidcup were not given the chance of running down the hill as Eastbourne somehow gained the advantage of that for the whole forty minutes. Maybe the fitness training in the heat was the order of the day. Eastbourne finished clear winners 33-17 and will do well in the league Sidcup have just left.

After Eastbourne and Bromley slogged out another forty minutes in the heat, Sidcup took on neighbours Bromley with greater commitment and in less heat as the coastal wind picked up. Sidcup came out on top 22-7 with fly half Francois Maritz opening his account for Sidcup.

Sidcup 2nd XV enjoyed their afternoon playing on an adjacent pitch. Good support work and handling enabled Sidcup to come out on top 55-12 with Jon Cosh scoring a hat trick of tries. This emphasises the competition that there will be for 1st team places this season.

Eastbourne hosted the day well and were true hosts as players from both sides showed the true spirit of rugby by enjoying an evening of pub golf and clubbing in to the early hours.

PRE-SEASON GAME vs. OLD DUNSTONIANS

A second trial game for Sidcup against last seasons rivals Dunstonians from L3SE ended in a win after overall period of eighty minutes split into four quarters.

Under the excellent playing and floodlight facilities of Croydon RFC there was plenty to cheer about for Sidcup with the only down side being that the supporters had to exchange short sleeves for winter coats and umbrellas. It was true November weather!

Again Sidcup took over 30 players and again both experienced and newcomers impressed. Playing these trial periods is always difficult for players but with the well supported summer training Sidcup looked able to change players around without too much difficulty.

Scoring two tries in each quarter made the try tally eight to one with only two conversions being added. Maybe an extra evenings training for the kickers is needed! Only joking.

Tries were scored by Iain Wilson, who opened the evenings account, Liam Rankin, Barry Jackson, Steve Amura, Ryan Conradie, Darryl Vas (from 1yard), Peter Grayson and Jon West.

Sidcup travel to Eastbourne on Saturday ,who were promoted to L3SE at the end of last season, before entertaining Blackheath in the first home game of the 125 season on Sept 1st.

PRE-SEASON GAMES UNDERWAY
London Irish Amateurs 5 - Sidcup RFC 41

Sidcup RFC made the trip around the busy M25 to Sunbury yesterday, to have their first run out of the season in a friendly with London Irish Amateurs (L3SW). The game was played on the professionals lush first team pitch minus a few markings. The four 20 minute periods allowed the five strong coaching staff to have a look at the the ten new players making their debuts for Sidcup RFC and of course the seven week pre-season training schedule was going to be tested.

With the mixture of these new players and the established players from last season, Sidcup had 34 players looking for game time. This was always going to be a difficult task against a Irish side who only had 18 players. By the time the last period started 4 players from Sidcup joined the Irish line up and impressed!

The afternoon produced a big headache for the coaches as everybody that pulled on the white jersey impressed. This will mean that Sidcup RFC will have a strong squad going into this season's London 2 South campaign.

It was nice to see new skipper Iain Wilson opening this season's campaign with a try and this was followed by a further 6 tries. Try scorers were Iain Wilson, Richard Roddis, Rob Macdonald, Matt West 2, Phil Evans and Matt Ditchfield.

The only injury in the trial was Dave Fennelly, who whilst playing for the Irish sustained a cracked rib. We wish Dave a speedy recovery.

Thanks to all the players, coaches and supporters that made the trip and to London Irish for making us most welcome. A great after match supper.

Sidcup RFC are at Croydon RFC on Wed 22nd Aug playing Old Dunstonians in a trial period game. Kick off is at 7.30pm. See you there.

SIDCUP WANDERERS TAKE THE BERESFORD-WEBB TROPHY

Sidcup Rugby Wanderers (Cricket Team) added another trophy to the season's collection by winning the Hugh Beresford-Webb trophy in the Twenty20 cricket match against Sidcup Cricket Club, last night (Mon 23 Jul 07).

The reduced 12 over match started but was abandoned after 4 overs when Tom Beament, the Cricket Club No. 3 batsman, tried his best to knock out our Club Captain Iain Wilson by letting go of his bat not once but twice. On the second occassion, whilst retrieving his bat Mark 'Groudo' Sawyer ran him out. What a good sport! This was too much for the umbrellared umpires who abandoned the match (spoil sports !!!).

So a bowling shoot out took place between the 11 players from both sides, each player trying to hit the unptotected stumps. After 11 attempts the score was 1-1 with second team skipper, Paul Edwards, doing the honours for The Wanderers. With sudden death now in force, club skipper Iain Wilson took the responsibilty of the first attempt and knocked the middle stump out of the ground. The cricket club were now panicking and their attemt by the hawaian shirted Jenkins failed, to the delight of The Wanderers.

The underdogs had won. Maybe not through a proper game of cricket but a trophy is a trophy. Mr Hugh B-W gave Man Of The Match to Iain Wilson for his very accurate bowling. I hope he enjoyed the champagne!

FARNINGHAM CC v SIDCUP WANDERERS

Sidcup Wanderers lost by 69 runs to very proficient outfit from Farningham CC.

Batting was our strong point against a steady bowling attack. Our top five did well with some good batting. Mark (Groundo) Sawyer and Mini West were the stars with the big hitting West nearly exhausting the Farningham cricket ball supply.

Many thanks to Farningham Cricket Club for their hospitality, which included a great tea and a barbeque after the game. Thanks for Jim Wilson for scoring and Allison for manning the barbeque. Thanks for the supporters that made the trip. A great day was had by all the team with some very funny moments, especially the umpiring of Mr. Farlam-Jones. He did such a biased job he will certainly be demoted to this role for the next match.

PJW - 17 Jun 07

On behalf of and with my other hat on as chairman of Farningham Cricket Club, I would to thank the players and supporters for turning up and playing yesterday. Although the result was not in favour of the rugby club, I think the game was played in a good spirit and as far as I can tell everyone enjoyed themselves. Congratulations to Mini West for a splendid knock.

Also I would like to thank Phil for organising his team and hope that Farningham can give you a chance of revenge next season.

From the chairman of Farningham Cricket Club, celebrating their 150th birthday to the President and all the players and supporters have a great 125th birthday.
