Continued good progress - still disrupted by the weather
No need to mention the continued bad weather but through all the disruption, the 1st XV continue their run of good form. We are currently sitting in fourth place in the league, three points behind Cobham in third place but we have two games in hand. And who do we play this weekend – yes, Cobham, who yesterday, while we had no fixture, suffered an unexpected defeat to OEs.

So next weekend promises to be a big game for the 1st XV and to add spice to the event, this is also the annual pre-match lunch to which we invite all of the cub’s sponsors. Sponsor or no, come along for lunch (£15 per head) and support the club for what should be an enthralling game – it’ll be a whole lot more exciting than watching England!

The other senior teams have also been going well in recent months. The 2nd XV are in third spot in the Kent Invicta League 1 behind big spending Tonbridge Judds and Canterbury 2s. The 3rd XV are faring well in the tough Kent Invicta League 2, a league in which they play (and have beaten) a number of 2nd teams and the 4th XV, who have already won one league title this season, are third of fourteen teams in the much stronger Kent Met Bishops Finger league.

Henry Dowswell mini rugby tournament cancelled
Unfortunately, the recent heavy rain caused the cancellation of this year’s Henry Dowswell mini rugby tournament. The tournament was due take place today (Sunday 28 February) but in order to give everybody plenty of notice, the decision to cancel the tournament was made last Thursday evening and judging by the amount of rain that fell today, that decision was undoubtedly the right one.

Race Night - With a Difference
Many thanks to everybody who came along to the Race Night in January. The night was a great success and was enjoyed by everyone that was there. We had hoped to raise £1,000 for club funds but in the end we exceeded our own expectations and raised over £1,400 – may thanks to all race and horse sponsors and to everybody that took part in the tote and other events and of course a special thanks to the pantomime horses. We haven’t yet booked a date but we’ll certainly be running a similar event next season.

Sidcup Sports Club membership card scheme
The membership card scheme has been in operation since 1 February 2010 and is generally running smoothly however some members have found that their cards do not register at the tills. No worries; if this happens to you you’ll still get your 10% discount but your card needs to be changed. Please leave it at the bar and I will arrange for a replacement card to be sent to you.

If you are a paid up member of Sidcup RFC but you have not yet received your membership card, please contact me on ian.anderson@btinternet.com or on 07867 904590.

President’s Day: Saturday 17th April 2010
Sidcup XV vs. Wasps Legends

A change to the previously advertised date but a change for the very best of reasons. WASPS LEGENDS – including names such as Kenny Logan, Damian Cronin, Andy Reed, Rob Henderson, Peter Scrivener – have accepted an invitation to represent Charles Prewer as the President’s XV in a charity match to be held in aid of the ‘The Jimmy Mizen Foundation’ and ‘The Royal Marsden Hospital’.

One of the features of the day will be an auction to raise funds for the two charities. We want to keep this to about 10 or 12 items but if you have any item(s) that you think would raise funds in the auction, please let me know – ian.anderson@btinternet.com.

The main game is due to kick off at 3pm with a curtain raiser between Sidcup Colts and Chis & Sid 1st XV for the Castleton Cup kicking off at 1pm. More details of the whole day’s events will be published nearer the time but expect this to be a big day at the club. Please make sure you put this date in your diary; this promises to be a day to remember.

Club blazers – now taking orders
Blazers are available to ALL members of the club. If you are interested in buying a blazer, the cost is £180; we’ll take a £90 deposit with your order and the balance is payable on delivery, which is expected to be around mid-April. Please contact Paul Edwards on secretary@sidcuprfc.co.uk or 07949 548455 for more information or to place an order.

Dates for the diary

Friday 5th March 2010 – Blondee
Brandywine Music present their first live music event at Sidcup Sports Club – BLONDEE, a tribute to Debbie Harry and Blondie. BLONDEE is fronted by the charismatic Dee, who eerily reproduces Debbie Harry's vocals and ‘don't mess with me' attitude. Strutting around the stage in some of Debbie's sexiest outfits, Dee provides the perfect focal point for the band on-stage. Tickets are £10 each available from the bar at the Club.

Saturday 6th March 2010 – Sponsors’ pre-match lunch
Pre-match lunch in recognition of the club’s many sponsors. Lunch is 12:30 for 1pm, the 1st XV game against Cobham kicks off at 2:30pm; the bar will be open from 11am.

500 CLUB DRAW

January 2010 SRFC 500 Club winners were:
£750 - Des Bennett (198)
£150 - Julian Freeman (330)
£100 - Nick Harrod (469)

The next draw will be on Saturday 6 March 2010.

GUESS THE SCORE
At each home 1st XV game, we run a 'Guess-the-score' competition; £2 a guess. The winner has to correctly predict the exact full-time score in the day's game. If there is no winner the pot rolls over to the following home 1st XV game. Payout to the winner is 50% of the accumulated fund; the balance goes to the club.

Yesterday, three people correctly predicted the game's final score and the accumulated fund was shared between Arthur McNally, Tony Buck and Malcolm Leamon.

RACE NIGHT - WITH A DIFFERENCE
Many thanks to everybody that turned up last night for the Race Night Extravaganza. A good fun night was had by everyone and we managed to raise over £1,000 for club funds. Thanks to all the race and horse sponsors, to the tote crew, to the pantomime horses and the staff of The Sunshine Mountain Racecourse. Looking forward to next year's event already.

Sidcup U9s forming a guard of honour awaiting the arrival of the 1st XV...

We took a scaled down squad to this event, but I'm pleased to say that the performances given were full on.  After some very productive warm up drills during which our boys show-boated the skills they have developed so far this season, we were invited to take part in a match, as a warm to the forthcoming main event between our respective clubs' 1st XV league encounter.

This proved to be no under-card bout but a full-on heavy-weight championship event. What was supposed to be a 9 aside match was changed by our hosts to a "let everyone play free-for-all".  This meant that our 14 brave boys squared up to Colfes' bloated squad of 17.  We spent most of the first half camped out on their try line with only the decisions of the referee keeping us from scoring.  Harry Ilsley this season has become a consistent challenge to every referee that he faces but no one can question his enthusiasm.  We thought that we had opened the scoring after one of Luke's trade mark runs, only to find that he grounded the ball short on a poorly marked out pitch.  We continued with wave after wave of attack, hampered greatly by tricky handling conditions with a very slippery ball.  They had a lucky break towards the end of the first half, from which they seemed certain to score, but Joseph made up ground on their star player and made a crunching try-saving tackle.

In the second half, Old Colfes turned on the pressure, but we defended resolutely as a team.  Lots of try-saving tackles from all but notably, Toby Baldy, Yasin and Luke.

For me, stood on the touchline as a spectator for once, I was so proud to appreciate the advance that all our boys have made this season.  They have all come on so far that not only their parents but the whole club should be very proud of them.

Gluke

Sun 24 Jan 10
Sidcup Minis vs. Old Elthamians Minis

Just one report received so far, from a very proud Gluke...

We had a great morning, with good joint skill development, followed by a series of matches.  We started with a couple of mixed ability games where we ended up honours even.  Then followed by  two matches of selected teams, much against my better judgement.  The boys fought hard throughout all matches, they seem to begin to understand that even if they are hurt, they need to carry on for their team mates.  Blood was drawn for Sidcup without retreat, boys cried, boys were hurt, but every boy carried on, every boy stood up against the Kent champions and asked serious questions of our illustrious guests.

Mizen XV 29 - West XV 31
Thank you to everybody that took part in the Boxing Day charity game, whether you were playing, organising, supporting or just taking in the fresh air.

The game ended in a respectable 31-29 victory for the West XV but much more importantly, over £2,200 was raised through t-shirt sales, programme sales, the auction and general good natured giving. The proceeds will split evenly between the charities.

Many thanks once again from the Mizen and West families.

WHOLE CLUB SEAL OF APPROVAL

We are delighted to announce that Sidcup RFC has been awarded the RFU's clubmark Whole Club Seal of Approval (WCSoA). We are especially proud of this achievement as we are only the second club in the country to receive this recognition. Many thanks and indeed congratulations are due to Allan Jones and Richard Cato for their efforts in ensuring we achieved the demanding standard required by the RFU.

WCSoA builds on the Mini & Youth Seal of Approval and requires formal documentation of and adherence to published policies, procedures, guidelines and objectives across the 'whole club'.
