SIDCUP WANDERERS - TWENTY20 GAME vs. SIDCUP CC
We came off second best to a Cricket Club side that included 6 first team players and a handful of youngsters that for some reason wanted to run around all evening!
Cricket Club batted first and knocked up a big total of 212 off 20 overs. We started the game with 8 fielders due to the early start but finished with 12. But the accurate hitting left us looking for the ball in the 'rough' more often than we would have liked. In fact during young Dickie Day's over, we replaced the match ball twice as we didn't want to disturb our neighbours!!
The Rugby Club started well with Mini West and Maz putting on 70 runs before our first wicket went down. The Cricket Club looked panicky as boundaries were plentiful but when Mini West went, only Maz managed to come to terms with the darkness and bowling.
Richard Evans ensured we ended the game with a good laugh after his batting pads had a mind of their own whilst taking a quick single. We ended on a very creditable 156, losing the game by 56 runs.

SIDCUP WANDERERS
Sidcup RFC players and supporters gathered for the annualinter-club start of season cricket match. The weather did not match the enthusiasm of the players. With spectators wrapped up in blankets, by the end of the match even the hardened rugby players were looking forward to the hot showers.
Guest appearances from Dave Driscoll Snr and Liam Rankin left everybody guessing as to whether they could play cricket or not. It turned out that one certainly knew what the game was about and the jury is still out on the other!
An early injury to captain Mark Sawyer, even before the game started, meant the President had to captain one of the sides whilst Tom 'Maz' Wicks guided the other. All batsmen throughout the afternoon were greeted by the usual 'quack, quack', which seemed to spur all and nobody ended up with an embarrassing zero to their name.
The President's side batted first and set a total of 188 with Jonathan Cole 25, Richard Day Snr 33 and Liam Rankin 24* making the runs. Rugby skipper Iain Wilson took 3 wickets and Richard Evans and Tom Wicks took 2 a piece. A mention for James Cosh who bowled his 5 overs for just 7 runs! The fielding was mixed with Miz taking two catches, Andy Hind Jnr dropping 3 catches and Dave Driscoll Snr apparently more used to a rugby ball than a cricket ball!
In reply Tom 'Maz' Wicks XI had a slow but positive start and with Paul Edwards and Mark Watson showing their class by bowling their allotted 10 overs for only 20 runs. After Miz hit a quick 18, the middle order performed and Tow Wicks 20, Andy Hind Jnr 25 and the hard hitting Farlam-Jones 40 meant that the President's total was in sight but the team ended 10 runs short with a total of 177.
Many thanks to Jim Wilson, Andy Hind Snr for ensuring we played to the laws and Mark Sawyer for scoring.

KENT SEVENS

Sidcup RFC sevens team that entered the Kent Canterbury Sevens on Sunday 4th May.
Although it was called the Kent Sevens, invitation sides were allowed from all over the South of England. The seven found themselves drawn in a group with last years winners 'Apaches' and favourites Warlingham (Surrey).
After opening with a win against UKC Cougars, there were two loses, firstly against Warlingham 5 tries to 3 after Liam Rankin was yellow carded in a somewhat bizarre penalty for 'sticking his backside out' to allow a Warligham player to football oscar a penalty! In the final league game we took on the Apaches to find ourselves trailing 17-14 with two minutes remaining. Rich Roddis made a break and Jon West in support just failed to hold onto the pass which would have taken Sidcup into the lead. From the resulting restart Apaches sealed their win. Warlingham lost in the main final to Tun. Wells and Apaches won the Plate competition, whilst The Sidcup Seven enjoyed a beer and hog roast!
The Seven played well considering the strong group and the first run out at Sevens this year. Chis and Sid player Todd Cutting had an excellent tournament and showed great pace.
Thank you to all the Sidcup supporters that travelled down in the resprayed 'Mizenomobile'. Join us this week (Sat 10th May) at the Footscary Sevens. Starting time is 11.00 am.

At the Minis EoS Presentation Evening, Ben Stock and Dominic Streete-Bharath were named as joint top scorers with 25 tries a piece for the free scoring U10s. But after leading the table for much of the latter part of the season, the eventual winner with over 30 tries for the U9s, was Ben Hart. Congratulations Ben.

Many thanks to all involved in what turned out to be an excellent day at the Club. Despite the weather, the curtain raiser was a well worked win for SRFC U18s over the 1st XV from Chis & Sid Grammar School and the main event was a tough encounter for both teams with the Penguins dominating the first half and Sidcup competing commendably in the second half.
Post-match presentations included Man of the Match awards for players from both games and acknowledgement and thanks from both hosts and visitors. Sidcup RFC is rightly proud of its association with Penguin International RFC and we thank them for the distinction and privilege of their visit.
Tommy Bull was on hand with his camera and photos from both games and the presentations are on the Gallery.

COLIN McGILL
Sadly, on Sunday evening, 9th March 2008, Colin McGill passed away after a sudden tragic illness. He was 37 years old.
Many of you will have known Colin or played rugby with him on many occasions as although he played his junior rugby at Westcombe Park, he joined Sidcup RFC’s Colts team (U18-19) in 1989. He played rugby at school for St. Mary’s & St. Joseph’s as a loose head prop, a position he continued to play throughout his career.
He continued playing for the club from the time he first joined, appearing in the first XV on 34 occasions between 1995 & 2001. He also played in the 2nd XV (was captain in 1998-1999 season) and latterly in the third XV.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Kelly and their three children, Danny, Jeanie and Sonny.
The funeral will be held at 11:45am on Tuesday, March 18th at St. Lawrence’s Church, Sidcup, and then at the crematorium at Hither Green at 1.00 pm. From 2.00/2:30 pm back at Sidcup Rugby Football Club.
Kelly has requested that it is not necessary to wear black tie and that flowers are sent to Uden’s Undertakers, Sidcup High Street by 9:30 on Tuesday morning. Kelly will be nominating a charity if you prefer not to send flowers.

DISCIPLINE
All spectators of Sidcup RFC’s matches, of whatever level or age group they are watching, should be aware of the following:
The RFU has recently had to consider a case where a match involving a typical town club’s 5th XV was abandoned because of excessive abuse of the match officials by that club’s supporters on the touchline. The undisputed evidence was that the players were not involved in the abuse. The RFU decided that the appropriate penalty was to fine the club a material, four figure sum
The message is that all clubs, at whatever level, must accept responsibility for the behaviour of its supporters at all matches, home or away. This responsibility extends as much to those supporting mini-teams as it does to those on the touchline for 1st XV matches, and indeed to all matches in between. Clubs in Kent must realise that the County’s Discipline Committee will be as resolute in dealing with cases of match officials’ abuse from the touchline as was the RFU in the one which came before it.
MEN OF THE MATCHES
Man of the Match sponsor, Sam Taylor, presents a bottle of champagne to 1st XV Man of the Match Richard Clarke, following his team's 29-0 victory over London 2 South close rivals Dorking, and to Alex Isaacs nominated as Man of the Match for his performance in the 2nd XV friendly against Canterbury Shield Division 4 leaders Haywards Heath.
RFU SEAL OF APPROVAL
President Phil West presents Richard Cato, Junior section chair, with the 'Seal Of Approval' plaque.

SIDCUP RFC AWARDED RFU SEAL OF APPROVAL

Kent President Robin Taylor presents Allan Jones with the RFU Seal of Approval. Many thanks are due to Allan, Club Secretary and Coaching Coordinator, and Richard Cato, Junior section chair, who both worked tirelessly to ensure the Youth section of Sidcup RFC reached the high standard required by the RFU for the award of their Seal of Approval.
SIDCUP 34 - KENT PRESIDENT'S XV 28

As part of the 125th Anniversary season celebrations, Sidcup hosted a Kent President's XV. In a closely contested match, the visitors, who had not played together as a team before this game, showed unexpected cohesion and the match turned out to be a fine and hard fought contest in whcih the home side ran out winners by 34pts to 28. After the game, presentations and Man of the Match awards were made to both teams; many thanks to Brian Bennett for sponsoring the Man of the Match awards.

GREETINGS FROM DOWNUNDER
On honeymoon in NZ recently, Scotty took time out from romantic duties to meet up and have a beer with the wandering MIz. Time away from rugby looks to be treating Danny far to well. Oh how we will enjoy seeing his expression change when he gets back for his first training session.
TOP TRY SCORERS
Although out of action due to injury, Steve Hancox has kept his place at the top of the try scorers league although he is now joined in top spot by Kaz from the U14s who scored a remakable 5 tries in his team's recent win over the Old Enemy from across the A20. The joint U17/16 side remain in top spot as top scoring team but as they're only likely to play the one game all season, we may consider introducing a minimum number games rule just to keep the competition open.
Keep the reults coming in. Although they may be a bit late sometimes, everytime I get a set of results and try scorer details, I'll update the tables. Anybody from the U9s who has a record of the scorers of the tries scored against Ton Judds on 28 Oct, I'd be glad to have the details. Email Ian Anderson
125 ANNIVERSARY HANDBOOK
The 125 Anniversary Handbook is now available. A lot of hard work has gone into producing this history, interesting articles and facts of the last 25 years. A few extracts from the Handbook are below:
'What a game rugby is whether you have played it in the amateur or professional form. It attracts you like a magnet with the physicality, camaraderie, team spirit and sociability. All the things life is about!
I hope you enjoy reading the handbook, which has been built around personalities in the club over the last twenty-five years.'
Extract from the Foreward by The President.
'I took over as Captain of Sidcup in the season of 2003/04, the year after we had been promoted to London 2 South. In that first season we were all looking forward to some ‘challenging’ fixtures versus Barnes and especially Richmond. Our first league game that season we played Portsmouth and won 29:22. A few weeks later we played.......'
Extract taken from an article by Danny Mizen.
'I used to think my life was busy until Yusuf was the coach. He invariably phoned me at least 3 times a day every day. He was also bossing ........'
Extract from an article by Martin Leamon
The price of the book is £10 and it is good keepsake for years to come. Rumours that this handbook has been brought out just in time for Christmas are untrue but it is already a best seller!! Please see Phil West if you would like a copy.

| Sidcup vs. Antwerp |
On Saturday, a combined Sidcup U17 & U16 team scored 10 tries running-out comfortable 64-3 winners against Antwerp Cadets followed on Sunday by Sidcup Colts who ran in 9 tries in their 49-0 victory against Antwerp Colts. Despite two heavy defeats, players, officals and supporters from Antwerp were delighted with their weekend and a few of the players gladly passed on their pink spandex playing shirts to Sidcup players.
A note of thanks to all those players, coaches and supporters for making Antwerp's time at Sidcup so enjoyable for them.
Click on the image above to see more photographs taken on the day; photos courtesy of Nadine Letange of Antwerp RFC.
The big scorelines above followed by some equally impressive results on Sunday in the minis' fixtures against Tonbridge Juddians and Old Gravesendians has given a different complexion to the Top Try Scorers Table. The 3rd XV have lost their overall top spot to the combined U17/16s whose 10 tries against Antwerp take them to the top of the table. Steve Hancox remains top individual try scorer with another impressive 3 tries for the 3rd XV in their 9 try rout of Beckenham. But he is closely followed by two players from the U10s; Ben Stock knotched up an remarkable 5 tries today to take his total for the season to 7 and Dominic Streete-Bharath is one behind on 6 for the season.

PETE GRAYSON, SIDCUP'S MAN OF THE MATCH
Despite eventually going down to a convincing score line at the hands of Jersey RFC, Sidcup 1st XV put up a good fight. Pictured above is Pete Grayson receiving a bottle of champagne from MotM sponsor Jim Wilson.
U15s TAKE 2nd PLACE IN THE TRY SCORERS TABLE
With no game this weekend due to the opposition calling off, the 3rd XV managed to retain their position at the top of the Top Try Scorers League. But now the seaon has started for the younger age groups, the U15s and U11s are showing what they can do; the U15s have scoered 13 tries in two games taking them to second while the U11s have knotched up 9 tries in 2 games putting them in third place in the table.
CONGRATULATIONS SCOTT AND KELLY

Congratulations to Scott and Kelly McLean who were married on Friday 12th October at Christ Church in Chislehurst. Scott, our second XV captain, insisted the wedding was on a Friday so he could watch the World Cup semi final, only to find his flight to New Zealand and Tahiti was at 9pm on Saturday evening; good timing Scotty!!
Mr and Mrs McLean will be meeting up with the wandering Miz and Fay and even our Kiwi friend, Nathan Ellery.
Sidcup RFC send all the best for the future. A few young props may be on the cards!!
HANKY SCORES TO GO TOP
The 3rd XV retain their position at the top of the Top Try Scorers League despite scoring only 3 tries this weekend in their narrow defeat to HSBC.
The legend that is Steve Hancox has taken the outright top position as leading try scorer for the club this season with 5 tries. Hanky is closely folllwed by a group of 7 players all of whom have scored 4 tries. This group includes the free scoring 2nd row forward Steve Evans the U14s very own Kazeem Faturoti.

Hat-tricks by Gareth Jones and James Evans keeps them on the list of top scorers but Kazeem retains his place as top scoring youth player, along with Steve Evans who added one to his total this weekend in the U18s 26-15 win over Blackheath.
Next week sees the start of the competitive season for the minis age groups; here's to some new names on the top scorers list.
U14s JUMP TO SECOND IN TRY SCORERS LEAGUE
As the season begins to get underway for the youth sides, five tries for the U14s in their 29-29 draw with Medway, three tries from Kazeem Faturoti, puts them in joint second place in the 'Top try Scorers League' with the 1st team who scored another four tries this weekend in their narrow defeat to Haywards Heath. MIZEN HEADS TRY SCORERS LEAGUE
After the first week of the season, immediate past club captain Danny Mizen, heads the list of try scorers together with Neil Parkins as they both bagged a brace at the weekend. But it is the 3rd XV who romp in to an ealy lead in the 'Top Try Scorers League' after scoring nine tries in their 63-0 victory over Blackheath Blades.

SIDCUP 2 - BLACKHEATH 1
Three games, all against opposition from Blackheath, kicked-off the 125 Anniversary season celebrations, with the 3rd XV using the pitch behind the stand for the first time. The afternoon proved to be very successful with no less that ten Sidcup Colts playing for the 2nd and 3rd XVs.
The 1st XV, playing Blackheathens, played well against a team who supply players to National 2 league rugby but were outgunned by a skilful and pacey side 36-17. Sidcup scored three tries through Danny Mizen (2) and Steve Amura, which included a driving/running maul for 22 metres, a try mch appreciated by the large crowd. In fact each of the three games had a good number of spectators, which was great to see.
Colts Dave Driscoll, Stevie Wade, Andy Hind (Jnr) and Steve Evans played in the 2nd XV against Blackheath Brigands and helped Sidcup to a 36-5 victory. Two of the Colts were on the scoring sheet: Steve Evans, who makes scoring for the U18s a regular occurrence and Dave Driscoll (Jnr). Senior scorers were Simon Burwood, Colin Cooper and Jim Hardy. All played under the watchful eye of coaches Barry Pinder and Dave Driscoll (Snr).
The 3rd XV ran out comfortable 63-0 winners and after giving Blackheath Blades two players still had plenty of replacements sitting on the bench. Lewis Anderson, son of Club Chairman Ian, went over along with Dan Evans who had a great match at fly half ensuring all nine tries were converted. Sam Eydmann, who had been impressing at summer training, played at scrum half whilst Ryan Hudson and Ibbi Ahmet went on the score sheet after coming on as second half replacements and Alex Isaacs playing at prop provided some very welcome fresh blood in the front row. The experienced Steve Hancox ably led the side and Coach Andy Hind (Snr) was there to ensure the side knitted together.
During the post match supper coach Phil Ubee and Captain Iain Wilson presented Blackheath skipper, Nick Maurer with the 125th anniversary shield and ties. Malcolm Schofield, manager of Blackheath was also presented with a 125 tie for his help in organising the day.
Blackheath then presented Sidcup with their shield and a caricature of a game between Sutton and Sidcup from 1957. The picture will be hung in the clubhouse.
With the Cricket Club having a successful day on the field, the Rugby and Cricket enjoyed an evening in the bar being entertained by Graham’s Duo.
A great start to the 125th Anniversary Season. Thank you to all the members that made the day a success.

TOUCH RUGBY - FUN IN THE SUN
Players past and present together with families and loyal supporters enjoyed Bank Holiday Monday in the sunshine at Sidcup RFC, as we introduced a Touch Rugby competition for the first time in support of the RFU ‘Go Play Rugby’ Campaign.
Eight teams were entered and thanks are due to Allison Couldridge, who allowed the President to make a guest appearance in her team for a couple of games. The 8 teams were split into two groups, which produced a thrilling final between Meares’s Mizzes and Whitford’s Hankies. This was won 5 – 3 by Meares’s Mizzes, who were led to victory by Captain and Man of the Tournament, Colin Meares.
The Plate Final was between The Young Ones (U18s) and J.D.’s Dunnits, a Sidcup 1st team of years past. This summed up the whole of the afternoon when The Young Ones overcame their seniors 2 – 0. The youngsters were keen to point out that this trophy was going to be the first of many for the season.
The trophies were presented by Club Chairman, Ian Anderson and hopefully, with support like we had today, this could become an annual event.
Many thanks go to Neil and Simon Beaton for running the bar-b-q and who had to make a second visit to Morrisons to ensure that no one went hungry.

REALITY CHECK AT THE SEASIDE
Sidcup travelled to join Bromley and hosts Eastbourne in a three way tournament held in the heat of the English summer! Sidcup took a 1st XV and 2nd XV with an initial party of 20 players leaving early for the coast, in their search for accommodation that had been booked for the evening's entertainment. It is a pity that the following players and supporters didn’t follow suit as this summer's shy sun brought out the whole of south London onto the M25 and A22. Well it seemed like it!
The format for the afternoon allowed the three teams to play in a three way tournament of two twenty minute halves, with the 2nd XVs of Sidcup and Eastbourne playing a full eighty minute game.
Sidcup 1st XV started against Eastbourne up the hill and against the stiff breeze but went into a ten point early lead. This seemed to be the signal to switch off and against a lively Eastbourne side this was very unwise. Having gained promotion into London 3 South East last season Eastbourne looked a talented and well organised side that were not shy of running with the ball. Their appetite in their first pre-season game was greater than Sidcup’s, who could have been labelled heavy legged after their third trial game in a week.
Sidcup were not given the chance of running down the hill as Eastbourne somehow gained the advantage of that for the whole forty minutes. Maybe the fitness training in the heat was the order of the day. Eastbourne finished clear winners 33-17 and will do well in the league Sidcup have just left.
After Eastbourne and Bromley slogged out another forty minutes in the heat, Sidcup took on neighbours Bromley with greater commitment and in less heat as the coastal wind picked up. Sidcup came out on top 22-7 with fly half Francois Maritz opening his account for Sidcup.
Sidcup 2nd XV enjoyed their afternoon playing on an adjacent pitch. Good support work and handling enabled Sidcup to come out on top 55-12 with Jon Cosh scoring a hat trick of tries. This emphasises the competition that there will be for 1st team places this season.
Eastbourne hosted the day well and were true hosts as players from both sides showed the true spirit of rugby by enjoying an evening of pub golf and clubbing in to the early hours.
