Sidcup RFC - a brief history
Rugby Football has been played at Sidcup since 1881 but it was not until two years later in 1883 that the present Club was founded with blue and black stripes as club colours.
The club initially survived a shaky start after being founded by two brothers, Leslie and Wandsworth Poole, nearly disbanding after a series of poor results, only to go on to endure two world wars and several more kit changes before its present incarnation.
Success has never eluded Sidcup RFC 1st XV and the club charted its first final appearance in the Kent Cup competition as early as 1893, before going a whole season unbeaten in 1908-1909, under their captain E.S.Holmwood.
Throughout its history, Sidcup RFC has had several of its players enjoy international success: Jim Staples who captained Ireland, Billy Bushell and Andy Hancock of England and William Pratten of Scotland.
This friendly and forward-looking Club now field some 16 teams from minis through juniors and colts to the four senior Saturday XVs. Indeed, it is a matter of great pride to Club members that several 1st XV players in recent seasons have graduated from the Club's youth set-up.
